What Is a Supramaximal Contraction?
In the context of HIFEM muscle-stimulation devices like Emsculpt, a supramaximal contraction is a muscle contraction induced by the electromagnetic field that’s stronger than what the muscle could produce through voluntary effort alone. It’s the proposed mechanism behind HIFEM’s muscle-building effect.
Where this comes from
Kinney & Lozanova’s 2019 MRI study of HIFEM treatment states that the device “induce[s] almost 20 thousand pulses in one 30-minute session,” and that “such frequency of nerve stimuli leads to supramaximal muscle contractions which are not achievable voluntarily” (Kinney & Lozanova 2019, Discussion). This is a mechanistic explanation offered by the study authors rather than something the study itself directly measured — the paper’s actual data (see HIFEM (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic Field)) is MRI-based tissue measurements (muscle thickness, fat layer, diastasis), not electromyography or force output during treatment.
Remaining gap: no independent neuromuscular physiology paper measuring HIFEM-induced contraction force against voluntary maximal contraction has been added to raw/ yet — the claim currently rests on the treating-study authors’ own characterization rather than a dedicated mechanism study. Flagged as a lower-confidence source than the imaging results, which were directly measured.
What can be said with current sourcing
HIFEM devices are clinically documented (via MRI and ultrasound) to produce measurable muscle hypertrophy after repeated sessions — see HIFEM (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic Field) for that effect-size data. The “supramaximal” framing describes the proposed mechanism behind that result.
